Volare featured in Forbes: Refining An Insect-Enabled Process For Making Animal Food From Low Value Crop Sidestreams
The food industry generates an abundance of sidestreams with energy potential, which can be utilized in various ways. One interesting option is to process those sidestreams by feeding them to black soldier fly (BSF) larvae, which can be processed into high quality protein and fats for pet food and animal feed. However, when it comes to making feed for animals intended for human consumption, some regulatory constraints exist, especially in the European Union.
Steven Savage highlights Volare’s technology and process for producing high quality protein and lipids from BSF larva without a significant addition of water. He writes, “Because of this their process takes substantially less energy than the existing method and thus a 50% lower operating cost. Volare went through the difficult process of convincing the EU regulators that they could meet their safety standards with the new method.”
